The CHP unit or diesel generator is a proven choice in many industrial plants for its performance and stability. However, these technologies themselves have their limits. Significant flexibility comes only from a hybrid microgrid with BESS, which combines the power of the motors with lightning-fast battery response through intelligent control and adapts adaptively to changing market conditions.
A microgrid is an autonomous energy system that can operate independently of the main distribution grid. What makes a microgrid "hybrid" is the ability to combine multiple energy sources and take advantage of their strengths at the precise moment when it is most advantageous. A hybrid microgrid thus cleverly combines CHP units or diesel generators with battery storage and possibly photovoltaics. This whole "orchestra" is controlled by an intelligent Energy Management System (EMS).
CHP units and diesel generators are designed for stable operation. In practice, however, the energy needs of a modern company face situations to which these sources alone have difficulty responding. BESS is not a replacement for engines - it is their natural digital partner.
The challenge for traditional sources | Hybrid microgrid solution with BESS |
Slow start-up and response: Engines need tens of seconds to minutes to reach full power. The peaks then have to be covered from an expensive grid. | Very quick response: The BESS responds within a few milliseconds. It covers power spikes, giving the motors time to run smoothly in their optimal mode. |
Inefficient partial loads: A unit operating at low power loses efficiency and requires more frequent maintenance. | Work point optimization: EMS allocates power to engines where they are most efficient. It stores excess power in the BESS, typically extending the life of the equipment. |
A difficult transition to the island: If the grid goes down, there is a delay before the diesel comes on, which can stop sensitive production. | Smooth operation: BESS immediately takes over the power supply of the critical load. The diesel generator is connected afterwards for long-term power supply in island mode. |
Low market adaptability: A static system cannot take advantage of market price volatility or provide fast support services. | Monetization of flexibility: The hybrid system adaptively engages in power balance services (SVR) or arbitrage, thereby increasing the overall value of the investment. |
You know that...
In the hybrid microgrid, BESS takes on the role of a lightning controller that instantly covers consumption spikes. Thanks to adaptive control, you not only protect your machines from spikes, but also your budget from penalties. Find out more about how this strategy works in practice in our article on Peak Shaving with BESS.
By combining the speed of batteries, the efficiency of cogeneration and the reliability of diesel generators, you get a system that protects you from market, grid and weather fluctuations.
